Myproduct: Fuel

Suite of enterprise level apps designed to make the life of fuel buyers easier and data more reliable.

This case study covers the work done for the largest domestic fuel supplier with 16% market share in the UK. All of the fuel selling process used to happen in antiquated manual software, resulting in a high error margin and labour inefficiency as well as negative impact around the business.

Problem

Primary issue of the project was a challenge of substituting an antiquated system with a robust modern solution without major drop in user acceptance.

Ultimately, we’ve broken the product into three areas : Volume (how much fuel to purchase), Cost (who to buy from) and Margin (how to make profit), and we have tackled each area based on user needs and business goals.

My role

I was brought in to redesign the process and create the tools that are needed to manage the complexity behind estimating volume and assigning competitive price.

My Process

Project snapshot:

How did I go about choosing the right research framework and following with a thorough design process for the overall project?

1. Mapping the as-is state

Following a series of qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys, as well as system usability assesment, I’ve mapped the as-is experience and data flows across the product.

2. Goal setting

I’ve then defined the first hypothesis and assumptions - such as “a better visualisation of what the team is working on will improve the user communication and dependencies.

This was followed by precise mapping of the business goals that the product has to answer.

3. Design

Moving into design part of the project, I’ve established the product IA and created a multitude of concepts and storyboards to bring the product to life.

4. Continous improvement

Those concepts were subsequently refined into low fidelity and mid fidelity concepts, followed by further testing.

Impact of my work

Business got:

Software that adapts to people, not constrains them, software that matches the maturity of other tools. They got an automated process without negative user impact and enhanced business performance.

I learned:

How to create a solid foundation for the future processes and journeys across the organisation, reducing complexity and improving business resilience & operational efficiency.

Project snapshot:

How did I go about designing a volume journey?

1. Mapping the as-is state

I have started this project from research and audit, capturing the “as-is” state of the volume journey (it is centered on how much petrol needs to be bought from suppliers in order to re-distribute across stations).

2. Goal setting and planning

I have then established clear user goals, diving deep into user scenarios and user processes.

3. Ideation

As a result of the previous steps of the process, I was able to quickly get to ideation workshops, followed by some concepts, sketches and low fidelity mockups.

4. Refined product

Raising the fidelity enabled us to further test and refine the product with the target audiences.

Impact of my work

Business got:

Reduced amount of data needed to display prompts for decision making, drastically simplified product flow and happy stakeholders.

I learned:

Handling complexity, how to meaningfully simplify very high complexity journeys into a clear model.
